Week 1-3
Play Forward From The Back
Defender Receiving & Build-Up Sprint
The Match Moment
In matches, they receive and automatically pass sideways or up the line - so opposition teams know exactly where the ball is going and press accordingly.
What This Sprint Builds
-
Receiving angles by pitch zone
-
Body shape to allow maximum visibility
-
Threatening forwards to manipulate the opposition press
-
Connecting centrally when appropriate instead of defaulting wide
The Outcome
Become the defender who can play forward under pressure - not the one who teams can easily press.
Week 4-6
See It. Play It.
Defender Long Distribution Sprint
The Match Moment
In matches, they don’t even look for the long option — because they’ve never fully trusted themselves to execute it.
Everything goes sideways or short. Pressure builds quickly.
What This Sprint Builds
-
Clean long hitting technique
-
Mobile push into midfield
-
Receiving to inform next action
-
Releasing before contact
-
Choosing when to go long vs secure
Built on the same long-distribution framework used at international U18 level — adapted for 3rd–5th Year defenders.
The Outcome
Become the defender who can get the team out of pressure and turn it into attack.
